Room 7 Newsletter
Week 1, Term 1, 2014
It’s hard to believe the new year has come around so quickly. I hope you have all had a fabulous summer and are eager to start 2014 at school. As I am the new kid on the block I thought it best to start with a quick outline of the term ahead and a brief introduction about myself.
My name is Louise Wilson and this is my first year at Mt Pleasant School. I have taught across levels and really enjoy working alongside students of this age group. I have spent the last 6 years at St Albans School teaching years 4-6.
I am the parent of two lovely children, Anna and Rory and I live with my partner Duncan in Sumner.
CONTACTS
You can keep in touch with us all via our classroom blog:
room7teammagma.blogspot.co.nz
Hopefully this will be able to be accessed through the school website at some time soon. This is a great way to keep relatives and friends outside of Christchurch in touch with what is happening in Room 7 too.
You can also contact me at my work email address louise@mtpleasant.school.nz .
TOPIC
Our initial topic focus for the term is all about learning about ourselves as learners. We will look at different learning styles, Art Costa’s ‘Habits of Mind’, Multiple Intelligences, and other tools that help us understand our learning preferences, strengths and weaknesses.
UNIFORMS & SUN HATS
Term 1 is a sunhat term and ALL children must wear a wide brimmed hat while at school outside the classroom. Mt Pleasant has high expectations around the wearing of correct uniform. I ask that you make sure that your child is well presented and in the correct uniform please.
HOME LEARNING
Throughout the term home ‘work’, will come home regularly.
This will be in the form of spelling words (and sometimes activities to accompany them), basic facts maths (if required), and an optional component that will be varied and based around supporting your child’s learning in class.
All the children in Room 7 are in Year 4 and it will be rare that they will bring home reading books from school. My expectation is that they are reading for pleasure every evening/morning for 20-30 minutes from a book of their choice. I am very happy to help guide them in their reading choices and recommend the public library as a wonderful resource!
Instructional reading will happen daily at school, but reading at home should be based around your child’s specific reading interests. It should be fun! They are no longer learning to read, they are reading to learn!
Mt Pleasant Radio -our radio station
One of my responsibilities around school is to launch our new radio station. We need a name, slogan and lots of input from our school community. I will be asking for students who are interested to apply for a range of positions including DJs, techies and artists... Kids- think about how you’d like to contribute!
WHAT’S GOING ON?

So far this month we have a couple of things coming up. I’ll keep you up to date, but please check the calendar on the school website for the most up to date information.
PLEASE SEND....
Can you please send along an old long sleeved shirt or long sleeved t-shirt that your child can use for art. We will cut or roll the arms to length- so it won’t be fit to wear again.
Tissues- I store them in the cupboard and have a couple of boxes out at a time. This saves space in children’s desks and ensures we have a store of them. If they were not on the stationary list can you send some along ASAP.
FINALLY
I look forward to working alongside you and your children. Do pop in and say hello or send me an email if there is anything you feel I need to know in order to help your child reach their full potential.
Best wishes
Louise Wilson
