Character Descriptions


We are learning how to write character descriptions (WALHT)

Yesterday we made a rubric for writing these.

Our rubric gives us clear guidelines about what is good quality writing.

Here is our rubric and some of our writing.

E.g. eye & hair colour,
 height, size, etc.
Yes- I have included 4 or more traits and added interesting details.
E.g. His green eyes sparkle like the sun and his nose wrinkles when he giggles
I have included information about my characters personality
I have included 1-3 things about their personality.
I have used words like kind and friendly to describe their personality
I have included 4 or more personality traits. And added some details about why I think that.
E.g. Quin is friendly because he always helps when I am sad or lonely
Yes- I have included
detail about their personality and used language features like simile or metaphor to describe it.
e.g. Brianna is as bubbly as a fizzy drink. Her laugh always makes me smile.
I have included information about my characters hobbies and interests
I have included 1 or 3 things they do.
E.g. Henry plays tennis and likes swimmimg.
I have included 4 or more of the things that my character does.
E.g. Taj plays basketball, likes running and can dribble a ball. He really likes eating hotdogs.
I have added
detail about what he does.
E.g. Quin plays rugby every weekend. He runs like a speeding bullet
up the field when he has the ball.
I can use a full sentence when describing my character.
I am not yet using full sentences
I use a list.
Some of the time I am using full sentences to describe my character
I am using full sentences  all of the time when writing about my character
Capitals, full stops, often an adjective or other way of adding detail
Here is an example of each below…
A metaphor is… a word or phrase that directly compares people, things animals or places

A heart of stone
Elevators turn my stomach into a roller coaster
His eyes were fireflies
A simile is…
Comparing things using as or like
His smile gripped me like a vice
Her jersey floated like a cloud
His eyes twinkle like a star when he laughs.
Onomatopoeia is... words that are sounds
Brakes screeching toot….toot
Imagery is... visually descriptive language
Laughter rolled off her face
The volcano explode like coke out of the can
Personification is… giving a human characterisation to something that isn't human
The wind moaned and the curtain danced
My alarm clock yells at me each morning
The moon played hide and seek with the clouds
Alliteration is.. repetition of a letter or sound
Silly Suzie swam down the lane
Come and clean out your closet

Hyperbole is.. an exaggerated statement that is not meant to be taken literally
The hurdler jumped so high she touched the sky 
If I can't get a smart phone, I'll die 
She is as thin as a toothpick 
This car goes faster than the speed if light










































































My Dad, Jamie

My dad Jamie comes from England and was born in Lester. 
My Dad has short chocolate brown hair. He has wrinkles under his eyes. He has light brown eyes. My Dad has dimples when he laughs.
My dad played rugby for the Lester Tigers and now works for the Crusaders. He is a computer analyst. My Dad is strong. He has two sisters and one brother. He played halfback for Lester. He likes scootering and biking.

Beau

Beau is an 8 year old boy. Beau has light brown skin and has light brown eyes. Beau has black hair, like black paper. He gets wrinkles on his nose when he laughs. He's fun and funny.
His favourite food is burgers. He plays rugby and got a try this year, and he's FAST. Beau is great at drawing. He is great at Manhunt.
Beau's birthday is 17th December. He was born in 2005. He likes swimming. Beau reads 'Mal and Chad'.
He is annoying at school time.
